Welcome to a trip back to the old Southwest Conference!
Most notably I include Arkansas, Baylor, Houston, Rice, SMU, Texas, Texas A&M, TCU, and Texas Tech.
SWC football ended in 1995 after Arkansas fled to the SEC in 1990.

I started this website a long time ago - and have been running a virtual SWC for 15 years now.
Column on the left includes historical links to all things Southwest Conference - many of the links are pages researched and developed by me.
In the middle column is the running blog commentary for the current year.
The right column is the virtual standings, a uniform wrap-up for the current year, and links to the pages from other years.

20 Year Look Back
2015 marked 20 years since the last official Southwest Conference games had been played. While the SWC ended in 1996, the last year for football was 1995. Throughout the 2015 football season I looked back at those last official games. Leaving them here this year since 1996 was the official end of the SWC and I still need to load some of the games.

Arkansas @ SMU
9/2/95
SMU won 17-14 in a thriller that went down to the final minute. Arkansas had one more chance and drove the ball down to the one yard line on a six minute drive. With 56 seconds left, Arkansas fumbled the snap trying to get it in the endzone and SMU recovered. That was the only win the ponies got in 1995 and Arkansas went on to win its SEC division title and its first winning season of the 90s. Check the 5:10 mark of this video for game highlights. Here is the original NCAA Official Scoring Summary (an amazing handwritten 13 sheets of paper - old school, baby)! Note: Arkansas had already fled to the SEC (because of basketball - SEC was about basketball back then) - technically I probably should not include this game.

Texas @ SMU
9/30/95
Apparently a yawner per some of the reviews. One of those articles from the UT paper says SMU didn't belong in the game - this the week afer they beat Arkansas and Texas got whipped by Notre Dame. Although Arkansas sucked back then (why the fled to the SEC for basketball). Texas ran up a season high 558 yards (341 on the ground mostly on the back of Shon Mitchell (his first game over 100 yards - 185 to be exact) with a hobbled Ricky Williams only carrying 9 times for 48). Game video with Celebrating SWC intro here. Complete stats here.

Houston @ TCU
10/7/95
TCU beat an undefeated Houston (4-0) 31-21 in Fort Worth. The defense was able to shut out the Coogs in the first half. Andre Davis set a school record with the 14th 100-yd rushing game of his career while Knake established a TCU record of 45, topping the legendary Sammy Baugh's 44. It was the largest crowd to watch a TCU/Houston game at Amon Carter at the time (34,684). Game summary here.

Rice @ Texas
10/7/95
Horns scored on their first three posessions but stalled in the 2nd quarter. Rice racked up 253 yards and were tied 13-13 at the half. The Horns had a strong second half capped off by two 4th quarter touchdowns by the still injured Ricky Williams - making it 24 unanswered points. Texas wins in Austin 37-13. Daily Texan article - game summary in the second article on that page.

A&M @ Texas Tech
10/7/95
Simply one of the biggest games of the year! Tied up 7-7 at the half, the remaining two quarters of the game was a defensive struggle... until the last Aggie possession. This was the infamous Zach Thomas INT game winning touchdown with 30 seconds left! An unranked Tech beat #8 Texas A&M 14-7. Spike Dykes' first win over a top 10 team and first win over a top ranked team in 17 years. The phrase "Wreck 'em Tech" may not have stemmed from this game - but it was surely born here! Game stats here.

Baylor @ Houston
10/14/95
A whipping... 49-7. Baylor gained 591 yards against the Coogs in the Astrodome! It was the first 500 plus yard game for Baylor since SMU in 1984. Baylor held Houston to 178 yards (compared to 401 in the previous game against TCU) and chased Chuck Clements out of the pocket all night. Baylor Lariat article.

SMU @ Texas A&M
10/14/95
SMU led most of the game and was leading 17-13 with 56 seconds left to play. The Aggies, without Leeland McElroy, drove it 70 yards in five plays and scored with only eight seconds left to avoid the upset and secure a 20-17 victory at Kyle Field.

TCU @ Rice
10/14/95
Rice led 14-10 at half time. But TCU rallied - catching up in the 3rd quarter and taking over in the 4th to win 33-28. Game summary here.

Rice @ Texas Tech
10/21/95
Owls fell behind early but launched a furious 18 unanswered points rally sparked by Chad Nelson replacing an injured Josh LaRocca in the waning minutes of 3rd quarter. At 24-18, the Owls defense could not stop Zebbie Letheridge and Byron Hanspard. Rice had a couple more chances: one due to a dropped snap on a Tech punt resulting in the offense set up in Red Raider territory which produced no points and a drive ending in an interception. Rice was able to score again and get a safety but came up short in the 31-26 loss at Jones Stadium. Scoring Summary here and Rice Thresher article.

SMU @ Houston
10/21/95
The week after nearly knocking off Texas A&M, SMU loses 38-15 to Houston who hadn't won a game since last year when they played SMU. But that game was closer than it looked with Houston scoring three touchdowns in three minutes. A 78 yard pick-6 by James Reddish cut he rally short.

Texas A&M @ Baylor
10/21/95
In an effort to "Color the Town" when the Aggies arrive, students encouraged anyone with a collie to dress their dog in Baylor colors! No idea how that worked out... On to the game! Baylor was hopeful, especially since the Aggies barely got by SMU AND had lost to Tech which Baylor had already beat. After a strong start by Baylor in hopes of getting their first win in 10 years against the Ags, the Aggies blocked a punt and quickly scored. Baylor tried to play catch up for the rest of the game and fell 24-9 at Floyd Casey. Baylor Lariat articles: post-game and pre-game. Another article about the history here.

Houston @ Texas A&M
10/28/95
Despite numerous turnovers by the Coogs, they were able to stay in the game until the end of the 3rd quarter. With 4:23 left in the 3rd quarter, Aggie Keith Mitchell chased Clements into his own endzone resulting in a hurried throw and a pick-6 for Andre Williams. TBD - more to come. Aggies won 31-7maintaining the lo ngest home winning streak in the nation. LA Times SWC Roundup for the week.

Rice @ SMU
10/28/95
Rice broke a six game winless streak by beating SMU 34-24. But it was not without drama. Rice allowed SMU to score two touchdowns to get back in the game and then a turnover allowed SMU to take the lead midway through the 4th quarter. With 8:47 to play, Rice scored and the defense was able to hold on to seal their 7th staight victory over SMU. Rice Thresher articles: pre-game and post game.

TCU @ Baylor
10/28/95
Baylor won 27-24 in Waco. TCU CB Godrey White got his hands on two field goals and a PAT. The TCU defense did a good job of holding Baylor after turnovers. But two big misses for TCU prevented them from a comeback win - touchdown pass in endzone was intercepted by Robinson and an outstanding pass/catch/run was called back for illegal motion. Despite some good efforts by TCU, Baylor controlled the game. Baylor Lariat artcile here.Game summary here.

SMU @ TCU
11/4/95
A cold rainy homecoming in Fort Worth did not dissappoint! SMU jumped out to a 10-0 start , but were dominated in the 2nd quarter after that. But SMU pulled back to 17-16 on a one yard touchdown run. SMU attempted a two point conversion for the win late in the 4th quarter - but Rick LaFavers intercepts and returns it 100 yards adding the two points to TCU's score instead for a 19-16 TCU win. TCU will have two consecutive winning seasons for the first time since 1959. Instead of a win, SMU clinches the longest consecutive loss streak (for major colleges) at eight - and winless in their last 18 SWC games. TCU Game Summary here. LA Times Southwest Roundup.

Texas Tech @ Texas
11/4/95
A promising Top 25 matchup ended up in a 48-7 rout by No.13 Texas over No.23 Texas Tech in Austin. I was at this game - I remember telling dad and begging the powers that be to "make it stop..." It was supposed to be such a good game with promise and a chance for Tech! Despite struggling against Tech's defensive pressure the previous two years, Texas scored on four of its first seven posessions and led 28-0 at halftime with 304 yards. Three of those scores took less than two minutes. And it only got worse for the Tech fans. 48-0 at the end of the 3rd quarter. We had great seats, first row in the upper deck on the 50 yard line. I was mis-er-a-ble! The 41 point margin was the largest over a Top 25 team in Texas football history. Zebbie Lethridge saw his SWC record string of passes without an interception end at 211 when he was picked off in the 1st quarter. Texas went on to score a touchdown shortly thereafter, pushing Tech behind 14-0. This was also the game that I thought Tony Brackens had killed my kicker on the fake field goal early in the 2nd quarter when we were down 14-0 and trying to make something happen. Tech had more chances in the 2nd quarter to get back in the game but came up empty. Texas ended up scoring 28 points off four Tech turnovers. Daily Texan articles and game summary. SWC in Bowl Season
Started off with a BANG - Tech getting its THIRD consecutive bowl win at the Independence Bowl. Then Rice lost (without JT Daniels). Aggies lost to Big 12 Okie State in the Texas Bowl (SEC, SEC, SEC...). SMU came up short in the Fenway Bowl. And of course, Texas shoulda woulda coulda won the Sugar Bowl - what a game. To be basically over, never have the ball, and then get a chance in the end to win. That hurt. So, SWC 1-4 in bowl games with TEXAS TECH being the only victor. By the way - only four Power 5 teams have won their last three bowl games (Minnesota, Matyland, Georgia, and Texas Tech).

Week 13
It all comes down to this. Whoever wins between Tech and Texas, wins the virtual SWC. But seriously, despite talks in 2021 that the series would continue after Texas went to SEC, this could be the last one. And the winner, of course, gets the spurs! Series record here. Can we bring the opossum??? A flashback to fifteen years ago... yes, it was 15 years ago! Tech footbal twitter made an incredibly beautiul video - almost feels like the death of the Southwest Conference all over again.

Zero sign of the New Trophy...
TCU was victorious - or shall we say, got stuck with the trophy. Baylor got off to a good start. But just doesn't have it this year. After the win, the new trophy was nowhere to be seen in the player celebration or the locker room. Half of it was sighted leaning up against something. I searched and scrolled through twitter, but nothing... Ha ha, do it! But seriously, looking at this who stole the break the rock thing from who??? SMU or FSU?

Week 12
2023 penultimate... sigh. THE REVIVALRY. Yep, not calling it the sissified snowflake decided Bluebonnet Battle. Oddly, one of my favorite coaches boasted how important the long term rivalries are a mere few weeks after TCU decidley "cancelled" the TCU SMU series. But for one year - and maybe forever - this SWC matchup will now be the longest running Texas football rivalry. So the student government powers that be decided it needed a more TEXAS name so they went with something cliche. It's embarrassing. Now don't get me wrong - I love quaint names like Bluebonnet Bowl, Dixie Classic Bowl, Salad Bowl - but those were charming things from the golden era of college football - you know, kind of like The Revivalry. 119 year old rivalries should come with things like buckets, jugs, axes, cannons, wagon wheels, and oil cans. NOT BLUEBONNETS... I am sad. The game sort of doesn't even matter anymore with this whitewashed coating. So it may be the longest standing rivalry in the SWC - but still not the longest consecutive SWC matchup. Series record here.

We're Not Calling It That
On the 8th, news leaked about a new name and logo for the Baylor TCU rivalry. Unofficially ALWAYS know as the #Revivalry. Everyone is in complete agreement. Absolutely - Complete - Agreement - Seriously. Someone even drew up a nice logo. Even after all of the negative response, the two schools made it official Monday the 13th. And look at this dog of a trophy... the trophy store down the street in cow town or in wacko could have done better. This is why you don't let student government do things that matter. Do bluebonnets even grow in Fort Worth? Even if the they do, they are dead in November - which is completely appropriate for this year's game. Maybe Baylor was gonna use this for the Texas rivalry before they decided to defect to the SEC. Even still, I want to know whose idea it was so I know who to disrespect the most. I am thinking TCU, since it's crickets on the Baylor accounts.

Week 11
Three matchups left. On the slate today is TCU and Texas. Series record here.

BREAKING NEWS
OU still sucks! Warning to those throwing Horns Down signs... This is the best thing ever!

Whew...!
Where the hell do we start? The opossum I suppose. Battle for the Saddle! TCU had some weird run going on Tech in Lubbock. Back in 2013 a fox entered The Jones and changed things. When the opossum showed up, the TCU twitter burners started falling apart. I have never seen a possum run that fast! Tech account made him their banner photo - can we take him to Kansas or Austin? But the game should have looked liked this - TCU and original artist finally worked it out, she is in the vault.

And then Saturday... what a day! THREE old SWC teams go into OT and win (Arkansas, Texas, and Houston at Baylor) topped off by attendance at the last Rice SMU game in the foreseable future. 2nd featured matchup of the weekend had the first Baylor Houston matchup since the SWC ended. Well, it was unrecognizable - what the game should have looked like. Not much attendance though... There might have actually been more fans at the Rice SMU game than at Shasta's litter box.

I had to watch Dana go for the two point conversion for the Houston win on the phone of a Rice mom who I sat with at the Rice SMU game. Now - on this, SMU HAD ONE JOB. We could of had a fairly true 1982 aesthetic - all SMU had to do was wear their base uni (could have been either home or away). But no, they had to trot in with that Dallas shit trying to make it an Astros/Rangers thing. So dumb. Last time I checked it wasn't Dallas Rangers or Rice Astros. The Rice unis were beautiful - only missing the pants stripes. These helmets were only worn in 1982. This logo was first worn in 1979 (and the original creator spoke up and identified himself). Stripes were on the silver helmet for the first three years. In 1983, the stripes went away on the blue helmet for the last year of this logo (diamond R was next). They were gorgeous in person and on the field. Yes, that IS the Worm Guy - and despite my efforts, he would not give me a single worm. And... apparently I had forgotten since this game had not been played since 2012 - The Mayor's Cup was at stake. The Rice Mob even got in on the fun with alumni wearing period appropriate band unis. They also roasted SMU's tv deal and gave them another check for $0. And also made a valid point. It was slow game and there was way too much to look at since I chose to sit behind the Rice bench. Plus every time I left my seat Rice would score or get a turnover, so I went up to concessions a couple of times and missed most of the exciting plays. Then sadly, my DVR decided to delete the recording even though I set it to not delete - so I did not get to watch it again and really "watch" it. My guess is since SMU is going to the ACC, the Mayor's Cup will never be seen in Houston again.

Week 10
Holy Hell - THREE matchups this week! And then only three left for the year. We are going out with a bang. First up The Battle for the Saddle which has been disappointing for Tech the last few years. Looks like this series will be every other year under what the Big 12 is doing... or not. I hate all of this, it is just so stupid! Series record here.

Next up is Baylor and Houston. First time since the SWC ended! Series record here.

And then Rice SMU - another one we won't see for a while. In fact this is the next to last SMU SWCmatchup for the foreseeable future (next year's SMU vs TCU is last). Series record here. Rice will be wearing throwback lids Worn in 1982 flanked by the silver version in 1981 and the navy version in 1983 which had the stripes removed. Unis look pretty sweet - only thing missing are the pants stripes.

Week 8
Texas and UH have only played three times since the SWC ended. 2000, 2001, and 2002. It has been twenty years! I originally had this one circled to attend - but, decided not to go since I thought it would be quite lopsided. Series record here.

Week 6 Wrap-up
TCU and Baylor are really bad. Just like the old days in the Southwest Conference. Tech finally wins in Waco - first time since 2007. I didn't know this was a thing... the nuns left quite early at 24-3, seems like their faith would hang on a bit longer. Tough loss for the Horns in Dallas - so many mistakes and they still almost won. What a crazy start with two interceptions, a fumble, a blocked punt touchdown, forward pass on a kickoff return... My favorite tweet after the blocked punt touchdown! But can we go back and talk about the mustard unitards in Waco... these must go. Baylor should look like this and this. I know, I know, new image, new Baylor that doesn't suck... oh, wait. So then same goes for TCU. And... now that the flying T is unlocked, when do we get to see that back on the field?

Week 6
BU-TT Bowl... ugh. Don't even know what to expect - this year has just been all around SWC chaos. Tech vs.Baylor ranks fairly high in SWC matchups with 81 between 1929 and 2022. 67 consecutive games between 1956 and 2022. Series record here.

And OU still sux!
It has been over 700 days since OU has scored a point against Texas.

What time is it?

Week 5 Wrap Up
Aggies just played too tough for the Razorbacks.

Texas Tech inducted Mike Leach, Kliff Kingsbury, and Matt Wingo into the Texas Tech Hall of Fame. Only uni notable for the game was a pirate flag on the back of the helmet. It seems though that both teams may have honored Leach by playing no defense for the bulk of the game... This is what the game should have looked like!

1978 UH vs Texas Tech Uni Extravaganza
UH was ranked 5th and headed for the SWC title. Tech had come out pre-game in red jerseys. But when the game started, they were wearing black jerseys with white shoulders. It was the first time since the 40s they had worn black and the first in the modern era. A Tech backer was trying to make an impact and decided to donate these special jerseys to intimidate UH. I guess it worked! Press described as a psychologocal ploy and to inspire emotion.

Week 5
Another double header today! Annual Southwest Classic in Dallas should be a good game. Hog Toons! The series ranks in the middle of the road with 79 games and 58 consecutive between 1934 and 1991 when Arkansas left the SWC. Series record here.

Houston heads back to Lubbock with Dana thinking they have the advantage because our QB1 is hurt and we are 1-3. Got news for him... The series is fifth lowest of all time with respect to SWC matchups at 34 and ranked third lowest in consecutive with 17 from 1976-1995 when UH was left out of the move to teh Big 12. Series record here.

Surprise Luv Ya Blue Unis for Rice
Just like Houston, Rice pays tribute to the Oilers too. But they are celebrating an earlier Oilers - the team that wore silver helmets and played at Rice Stadium in 1966 and 1967. Helmet full on Oilers of that time period, jersey too - except for the sleeve stripes did not include red. In addition, the pants included no red stripe. I assume this was tie into more Rice theme. Fun, nonetheless! Gear Up segment here.

Week 4
Our first double header! Baylor and Texas has the third longest consecutive game matchup between SWC teams - starting play in 1914. 77 consecutive games between 1945 and 2022 will stop at 78 this year with Texas heading to the cough, cough... sec next year. I am afraid Waco is in line for a drubbing. Actually, our first three weeks has certainly been an ode back to our beloved SWC with the wins and losses we have seen. A&M and Texas have the longest run which ended in 2011 at 97 (1915-2011). Texas and Rice were 2nd on the list with 80 from 1914-1995. See the series history here. The game will only look half good since Baylor will be wearing all green. Hmmm, wonder if they plan on doing that lay down in the endzone TCU trick...

Now, Battle of the Iron Skillet - TCU and SMU... whew. The hatred between these two right now is flooded onto twitter early this week. Hell, maybe actually last Saturday. It is quantity over quality, that is for sure - and hopefully no real ponies were actually hurt in the filming of the numerous falling horse memes. Consecutive games rank up in the upper half of SWC matchups with 61 between 1926-1986 when the death penalty hit. It has had its gaps in 1919, 1920, 1925, death penalty years, 2006, and in 2020 I really think TCU did not want to play them and claimed Covid. I feel like TCU did not want to continue and risk getting beat by a non-power 5 - but with SMU's move to the ACC, we will see. Hopefully just a miss for a year or two after the 2025 edition and then we get the schedule all sorted out. Should be a good one - SMU has won two out of the last three (both in Fort Worth). But Sonny has won the skillet in the last three matchups (twice as the SMU coach and once as TCU coach)! Series history here.

Looking Ahead to Iron Skillet
Flashback to a great prank - A Growing Rivalry. It seems like SMU left behind more than a goose egg in November of 2000 when the Frogs spanked them 21-0. The SMU band during halftime dropped strategic mounds of rye grass seed on TCU's football field. By February, the seeds sprouted into a large diamond shaped "M," the band's trademark formation. This for sure my biggest tweet ever!

It Could Have Been So Much Better
Toyed with being there in person, but travel plans and the fear of rain, the whole first Big XII game for the Coogs... kept me away. The game certainly could have been better. But hey, Helmet Cart alert! I sincerely hope UH now being in Big XII results in more helmet carts! The Houston band spelled out all of their conferences at halftime.

Tech Throwbacks on the Field

Throwing back to the 60s era (Donny Anderson) - very nice look! First, I think the Double T on the numbers is dumb - but I do realize that they are trying to capture the mesh jersey look that all Texas teams wore back in the day (and it adds something to the simpilicity for the kids). Nice touch putting the gray facemasks on (although white ones were indeed starting to enter the scene). Again, loosely inspired because I have images of that era with and without sleeve stripes and with and without black outlines around the numbers. But I will never speak badly of anything requiring a #FlatDoubleT on the helmets!!! Some details here and here. Just do it. We are undefeated wearing the Flat Double T!

Week 3
Starring for the first time since 2007, TCU and Houston will be our #SWCmatchup for week 3. There is not a long and storied history here (as with all UH games) since Cougar High did not join the SWC until 1976. The longest span was the twenty years from 1976 - 1995 at the end of the SWC. The only matchups since the SWC were from 2001-2004 and in 2007. Numbers history here.

Bayou Bucket is back on South Main
What. A. Game. Rice absolutely dominated the first half and then, deja vu... is it happening again? Houston comes back and ties it. Two edge of your seat overtimes... and the Rice defense held out! And the bucket returns to South Main! Coach then did exactly what I suggested in response to Dana's post last year!

Week 2
The Bayou Bucket - last one currently scheduled, but both schools want to see it continue and talks continue to have the game through 2027. So whoever wins might get to keep the trophy a bit longer than normal. Houston has the advantange - but will they be looking forward to Big XII play? Rice almost got them last year... And JT Daniels adds a new wrinkle.

Week 1 in the Books
Rice scored first (although most of us missed it because Fox was riding the Deion hype train) and then hung tough for a good while. But Texas eventually overpowered them. Two dissappointing things from the North 40 to report. First - I don't know the details but it appears the The Mob was not invited to Memorial Stadium - this is a new move from seating them in the nosebleeds to not inviting the visiting band at all. Disgraceful and poor sportsmanship. Also... Texas has in their minds already left the Big XII - no more Big XII team flags around the top of the stadium. What? They cannot afford a few new flags for a year?

Houston's Oilers Tribute Unis
First I saw this and I was confused. Then I saw this and realized the field paint was real, but still didn't get it. Oh my God, these beauties! Andre Ware was of course in attendance supporting the team. And LOVE LOVE LOVE how FS1 matched the scorebug to the unis!

Week 1
The season starts out at the gun and with a bang! Why does Rice play Texas? This is why.

1960s Donny Anderson Throwbacks
Simpler Donny Andreson era throwbacks (at least the jersey... no sign of the pants yet)for 9/16 game. I would say it is loosely inspired since uniforms were kind of mismatched back then and there were lots of subtle nuances (I have not completed my research from the 60s). Hate the Double T logos as the mesh pattern on the numbers. But any time we wear a Flat Doulbe T is a big win!

Dust Settling - What's It Means for SWC Matchups
Houston joining the Big XII will likely add four new games (at least this year). SMU not making the Big XII will likely mean the loss of the Battle of the Iron Skillet after 2025 - just too risky for TCU to lose that game now. When Texas and OU leave, we stand to lose a significant number of #SWCmatchups. The ONLY silver lining there is that Texas and Texas A&M will renew their rivalry. But with soooooo many new teams in Big XII, there will be a ton of conference games I care nothing about... So we have +3 -6 +1 = loss of 2. One thing for sure is we get one this year that has not happened since the SWC ended - Houston vs. Baylor!

In the Wash
Arkansas
Keep it classic - don't touch it. Clean and simple jersey with fantastic double stripes on the pants. No changes known yet for this year.

Baylor
While it has been reported that Baylor is in talks with Nike about new colors - no change is expected this season. Now that can only mean the return of true gold unless of course it means a stupid black uni. For now it is the yellow (athletic gold, that is - as The Old Baylor Line is rolling over in their graveswith a complete absence of a gold helmet). Pants with yellow and green stripes and a gold helmet will always be the best look. But the athletic gold is old school - and suitable for Sailor Bear even if it is locked in a vault only coming out for one game a year

Houston
Helmets with script or not, no matter. The big question is will those beautiful pants stripes return after missing last year. They have been wearing the double striped ones at practice. UPDATE: Same ugly high school pant s stripe... sigh.

Rice
Rice had fun last year putting the classic stripes on the helmets even asking the twitterverse if they should keep them. New American Conference patch this year.

SMU
Keep it classic and I will live with the Dallas alternates. They are pretty good design - keeping with the brand. Let's see if ugly black and blue returns...

Texas
Absolutely nothing needs to change here EVER. And Del Conte agrees! New Nike template pushes TEXAS wordmark further down the chest. Remember, the tv numbers on the shoulders and Bevo above the wordmark were removed for 2022.

Texas A&M
Still wearing the Slocum era inspired plain maroon jersey (without the white sleeve cuffs) they adopted back in 2020. Still approve of the white facemask, always - especially with a non-metallic high gloss (2020 dumped the matte helmet). Of course, the best thing that happened with the 2020 unis was the death of the bevel on the number. Same look this year, new Adidas template. Holy shit - I just looked at the old uniform reveal article from 2020 and it actually tries to tie the nicks/a> in the "customized" number font to barbed wire! WTF? But two words for the Aggies: PANTS STRIPES (see below).
So let's do a quick look (based on photos I have an not ruling anything out because I did not see it) at the 80s to mid 90s Aggie unis. All of these I address have the white facemask (worn until 1999). 1980 = no pant stripes, 2 stripes on sleeves. 1981 brought 2 thin pant stripes. 1982 brought the beloved (at least by me) gray pants w/stripes plus the white pants w/THICK stripes. 1983 added a maroon pant w/thin stripes. This is when Jackie Sherril said I don't want the other team to be able to hear a single snap count (at Bonfire) and everything changed from here. 1987 gave us white pants w/NO stripes. 1990 lost the sleeve stripes and maybe went to the white cuff. By 1995 maroon pants had no stripes. TCU
Not sure what to expect this year - time will tell. Last year they got rid of the helmet stripes (purple helmets, White helmets).

Texas Tech
News of new simpler Donny Andreson era throwbacks (at least the jersey... no sign of the pants yet). I would say it is loosely inspired since uniforms were kind of mismatched back then and there were lots of subtle nuances (I have not completed my research from the 60s). But I could do without the double Ts as the mesh patter on the numbers. And I am intrigued that they have been wearing throwback striped pants in practice...

10.13.08 - Susan, I love your web-site, SWCFootball. -Jay B

09.03.08 - I had to chuckle whena I read that SMU is going back to their "roots" by sporting white helmets. If they truly wished to go back that far, they'd wear all red (leather or plastic). As a native San Antonian, I remember their uniforms from the Doak Walker-Kyle Rote-Pat Knight era: red helmets (no stripes), red jerseys (no stripes), white numerals, and gray pants. No blue at all to be seen. (For what it's worth, in the 1940s I watched many a high school game with Rote and Knight in the backfield for the Jefferson Mustangs.) Much to my father's annoyance, each football season I'd plaster the windows of the family car with those Humble Oil giveaway pennants in SWC team colors. As I recall they were placed on the outside of the windows and made for difficult removal (once the season was over, that chore was mine). Keep up the good work. -Warren Thompson, Lebanon PA

09.03.08 - BTW, Susan, that's an amazing site on SWC you have. Good work. -Justin in AR (via Uni Watch)

07.04.08 - I love your SWC site. I've put up a season-ending wrap the last two years: the final SWC standings, using Jeff Sagarin's rankings. Hope you'll check it out. Go Owls! -John Cunyus
